The City of Kumba
Kumba (commonly referred to as K-Town) is a city in the
South West Region of the Republic of Cameroon (Central
Africa). The origin of the City is attributed to a hunter named
Mediki Ukeh(see statue to the right) who settled in the area
around 1700 a.d. Mediki was attracted to the area by the
abundance of scheflerra actinophylla (umbrella tree) known in
the local dialect as "Ekumba" that was considered at the time as
an indicator of fertile soil. This together with the presence of
fresh water and forest for hunting attracted families from
nearby areas including Mashuie to Ekumba (currently Kumba).
Today, the City is a cosmopolitan city with three local councils
within the municipality and a population of over 2
00.000
inhabitants (based on 200
9 estimates). The natives of Kumba
are the bafaws with other tribes including balong, bakundu and
barombi also within the municipality.
History of  K-Towners Community Association of Toronto
(KCAT)
The association was created to provide support for its members,
liaise with other organizations in the diaspora interested in the
development of Kumba; provide opportunities for learning and
avenues of information sharing amongst members, and fund
development projects within the municipality of Kumba. The
first meeting of ideas for the formation of the KCAT took place
on the 3rd of May, 2004 at Mrs Grace Baiyee's residence.
Following fruitful deliberations, the first general assembly
meeting took place on June 3rd, 2004, at Miss Rosemary
Bambot's residence and this is considered the beginning of
KCAT. Membership to KCAT is open to any Cameroonian of
good character who has resided or studied in the Kumba
municipality. Membership is also open to any person of good
character with deep interest in the well being, development and
prosperity of Kumba. K-Towners Community Association of
Toronto celebrated its fifth Anniversary on August 22, 2009
with 45 registered members.
